about

Spilling out with vivid detail and panoramic emotion, Shane Reis and God.Damn.Chan's debut collaborative album VEIB is hip-hop music at its most raw and potent form. Mind-bending vernacular and dynamic productions are akin to many classics from the past and present, charting a map for the continuation of real hip-hop music in the 2010s.

VEIB (pronounced VIBE) was first conceived while the two were touring together, determined to craft an album that would represent their love for music and the stakes they see in the direction of modern rap. "VEIB was made almost in spite of where hip-hop is currently at," explains God.Damn.Chan. "We talked a lot about making a straight up rap record, and not worrying about making a hit. I feel like VEIB offers a sort of “check and balance” to a lot of stuff that’s out there." Lush beats from God.Damn.Chan provide a propulsive canvas for Shane Reis to let the darts fly lyrically and the cadences to wrap around each tone. Fearless storytelling that ruptures through the current state of America and the sliding discourse of our times. Not all is bleak, also calculating the light hearted and jovial sides of life.

The influence over VEIB was direct, soaking in the sounds of Kendrick Lamar's DAMN and JAY-Z's 4:44 during repeated listens on tour, attempting to define an album that retained the seamless qualities of those two records. With productions crafted first and lyrics written to the beats, there's a cohesiveness from beginning to end that makes this record shine. As the artwork depicts, a cinematic experience that calls on something bigger than the artists themselves. VEIB evolves the backpacker lineage and gives it a tasteful sense of personal reflection and outward perception, connecting with anyone from this generation regardless of lifestyle and past experiences.

God.Damn.Chan recently relocated from Portland, Maine to Los Angeles, California, establishing himself in the evolving landscape of LA's beat maker community. Shane Reis has been storming stages and paving roads through his lyrical presence in Portland, Maine, home to a quickly rising hip-hop scene that's built on the foundations of an ever expanding movement. Shane Reis adds, "Portland, ME has an incredible hip-hop scene. We have old heads that have paved the way and we have some of the new wave cats ripping it up. It’s a pretty tight-knit scene that intertwines with the other music genres as well." Shane Reis and God.Damn.Chan first started working together in Maine during their high school years, establishing a heightened connection that allowed for collaboration to occur in studio, during tours, and over the internet.

VEIB is the first official full-length from the two and sees the light of day May 11th on The Order Label, home to artists such as Milo, Jonwayne, Sahtyre, Asad ILL, Self Jupiter of Freestyle Fellowship, Busdriver, DJ Nobody, Noa James, and many more.
